Fed: GG rejects offer to intervene in Tampa issue

Governor-General PETER HOLLINGWORTH says he can't intervene to help the asylum seekers
aboard the Norwegian freighter Tampa.

United Nations Association of Australia president MARGARET REYNOLDS called Government
House earlier this week to ask Dr HOLLINGWORTH to help find a solution to the problem.

Dr HOLLINGWORTH is also patron of the United Nations Association of Australia.

The governor-general's official secretary MARTIN BONSEY replied in a letter today,
saying Dr HOLLINGWORTH shares the concerns of all Australians at the plight of those involved.

But it would not be appropriate for the governor-general to initiate any action of
the type suggested.
