NSW: Police seize record ecstasy haul worth $45m
The federal government has hailed Australia's biggest ecstasy haul as a major blowto drug dealers less than a week before New Year's Eve.
Police believe they may have cracked an international drug smuggling ring with theseizure of 750,000 ecstasy tablets worth an estimated $45 million.
The Christmas Eve raid by federal and New South Wales police netted 250 kilograms ofthe drug at a unit in Sylvania, in southern Sydney.
Police say it was the result of a four-month surveillance operation.
They've arrested three men alleged to be members of an international drug trafficking syndicate.
Federal Justice Minister CHRIS ELLISON says the seizure will have a devastating effecton criminals dealing in ecstasy, particularly in the week before New Year's Eve.
Fifty-six-year-old FRANCIS BALLIS of Bondi, 52-year-old WAYNE MOORE of Sylvania and48-year-old Canadian CARL HINKE appeared in Parramatta Local Court on Christmas Day, chargedwith drug offences under the Customs Act.
They did not seek bail and have been remanded in custody to appear at Central LocalCourt on January 15.
